Help & GPX Guide

Need a hand getting your TRACE?

Your TRACE is created from your own GPS-recorded activity, so we'll need a GPX file containing the route from your adventure.

Whether you've completed a trail race, a multi-day adventure or Te Araroa, this guide will help you get your GPX file and photos ready to create your personalised map.

Getting Your GPX File

Most GPS watches and activity platforms allow you to export your recorded activity as a GPX file.

Garmin Connect

Open your activity in Garmin Connect on a computer, select the settings menu and choose Export to GPX.

Save the GPX file to your computer, then upload it when ordering your TRACE Race Map.

Strava

Open your activity on the Strava website, select the ••• menu and choose Export GPX.

Save the file to your computer and upload it with your order.

Apple Watch / Apple Fitness

Apple Fitness doesn't provide a simple GPX export option for individual workouts.

If your activity was recorded with an Apple Watch, an app such as HealthFit can be used to access your Apple Health workout data and export your activity as a GPX file.

  1. Install HealthFit on your iPhone.

  2. Allow HealthFit access to your Apple Health workout data.

  3. Find the activity you want to use for your TRACE.

  4. Export or share the activity as a GPX file.

  5. Save the GPX file ready for your TRACE order.

For longer adventures recorded as multiple activities, export the individual GPX files first and then follow the instructions below to combine them.

Other GPS Platforms

Most GPS and activity platforms have an Export, Download activity or Export GPX option.

If you're unsure how to get your GPX file, get in touch and we'll be happy to help.

Combining Multiple GPX Files

If your adventure was recorded over multiple activities — particularly a multi-day journey such as Te Araroa — please combine your activities into a single GPX file.

We recommend using the GOTOES GPS File Merger, an online tool that can combine multiple GPX activities into one file.

How to combine your files

  1. Open the GOTOES GPS File Merger.

  2. Select or drag in your GPX files.

  3. Upload and process the files.

  4. Make sure your activities are in chronological order.

  5. Combine the activities.

  6. Export and download the finished file as a GPX.

  7. Keep the combined GPX file ready for your TRACE map.

Have lots of activities?

That's no problem.

GOTOES accepts up to 20 files at a time. If your journey contains more than 20 activities, combine them in batches first and then combine the resulting GPX files into one final file.

For example, if your Te Araroa journey contains 100 individual activities, you can combine them into five batches of 20, then combine those five files into your final GPX.

We recommend keeping a copy of your original activity files.

Te Araroa GPX Files

A complete Te Araroa GPX file can be very large, so you don't need to upload your GPX file when placing your Te Araroa map order.

Once your order is placed, we'll email you a simple link so you can securely send us your full combined GPX file.

This allows us to work from your original GPS data without reducing the quality or detail of your journey.

You can still upload your photos when placing your order.

Choosing Your Photos

Photos are optional, but they're a great way to make your TRACE more personal and help tell the story behind your adventure.

Personalised Race Maps

You can upload up to 2 photos from your race or adventure.

Te Araroa Maps

You can upload up to 6 photos from your Te Araroa journey.

Use the original, highest-quality photos available wherever possible. Landscape photos generally work best with our map layouts.

Choose the moments that mean something to you — scenery, race-day shots, milestones, finish-line photos and the people you shared the adventure with can all work well.

What Information Comes From My GPX File?

Your GPX file contains the GPS track recorded during your activity.

Where available, TRACE uses this information to recreate the route you actually travelled and produce the statistics and details shown on your personalised map.

For race maps, GPS timestamps also allow us to create the pace-coloured route, showing how your pace changed throughout your adventure.

If your GPS recording started late, finished early or contains incorrect information, you can provide your official race distance and/or finish time when ordering.

Digital & Printed Maps

Personalised Race Maps

Personalised Race Maps are available as:

  • A3 Digital PDF — 297 × 420 mm

  • A2 Laminated Print — 420 × 594 mm

The digital option is supplied as a high-resolution PDF designed for printing at A3 size, giving you the flexibility to print and frame your TRACE yourself.

Our physical Race Map is deliberately produced at the larger A2 size, giving the route, terrain, photographs, statistics and elevation profile plenty of room to make an impact.

Each A2 Race Map is professionally printed in New Zealand and finished with a premium matte laminate, providing added durability and long-lasting protection.

Te Araroa Maps

Te Araroa maps are available as:

A0 Laminated Print — 841 × 1189 mm

At almost 1.2 metres tall, the A0 format gives the full Te Araroa journey, statistics and photographs the space they need to tell the story.

Each Te Araroa map is professionally printed in New Zealand and finished with a premium matte laminate, providing added durability and long-lasting protection for your map.

The result is a substantial large-format piece designed to showcase an adventure stretching the length of Aotearoa.
